Get the facts and improve your chances of a long, active and healthy life
More than 100, 000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past year. That’s 280 people a day. And over 85% of these people have type 2 diabetes. If you know you have the condition, you can take steps, get medical advice and start taking control. Right?
Yes, but what if you don’t know?
According to Diabetes Australia, over half a million Australians have type 2 diabetes and don’t even realise. This silent invader can be damaging your health without you even knowing it.
Okay, stay with me. Before you decide this isn’t about YOU or your family, let’s bust a few myths.
MYTH 1 – Diabetes is not serious
The truth is there is no such thing as mild diabetes. This condition can cause you to lose your vision. Your kidneys can stop working. You can develop problems with your heart and blood circulation.
Poor circulation is the cause of amputations and that’s happening, a lot. In fact, Diabetes Queensland reports that ‘around 70 Australians a week are having feet amputated as a result of preventable diabetes-related complications.’
Amputations are to be avoided at all costs, I’m sure you’ll agree. Losing your foot, or lower leg, means that you have to manage this disability as well as your diabetes.
MYTH 2 – Only overweight people get diabetes
The truth is there are many factors that affect whether or not you’ll get type 2 diabetes. Some overweight people do, and some don’t. And, what’s more, being a healthy weight is no insurance. You can still develop type 2 diabetes.
MYTH 3 – Type 2 diabetes is just a disease that old people get
In the past, most people were over 45 when they got their diagnosis.
But the numbers don’t lie… Today more and more children, adolescents and young adults are also developing this lifelong condition.
